Code of The West

By Jeff Rolfzen & Rocky Steen-Rolfzen

Get up get up old prairie sun the fields are filled with barley

A man came by just yesterday and I trust he will not harm me

His hat was black his boots were strapped and on a horse was riding

He asked for work and I gave him some but didn’t ask for money

I gave him place to take his rest he laid his saddle down

Don’t ever beg, work those hands we’ll give you what we can

There is no God there is no law there’s only what works best

And out here that’s just one choice

The Code of The West

Get down get down the dust cloud comes behind a dirty rider

His face is hid his gun was gun and he was looking hungry

I’ll shut the doors and lock them tight I will not give him shelter

He can rap the door and curse my name but I will not give him answer

If you do not leave I’ll fire my gun you do not have a chance sir

He says to me “you’d better pray, I will not go away”

There is no God there is no law there’s only what works best

And the gun shot cracked and signalled out

The Code of The West

Wrap up wrap up the cold wind blows and the snow drifts they will beckon

So many men have heard the call become their final seconds

Your steed will freeze and bend his knees you must take what you can carry

I paint my barn i paint it red so you may find instead

And old hay loft with straw and feed, that’s better than being dead

The storm clouds block the heaven’s sky an answer you won’t find

There is no God there is no law there’s only what works best

So paint your barn the color of

The Code of The West

Get up get up old prairie sun the fields are filled with barley

You have your work and money some and little else to worry

You have your crops you have your kin your neighbors you call family

I only know the lonesome wind, I know not what it carries

If you are a stranger remember how it works

There is no God there is no law there’s only what works best

Some call it faith some call it luck
